Summary:

This volume, funded by the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund through DFRA and English Heritage, provides a synthetic review of the background and archaeology that has emerged through archaeological interventions associated with the quarrying of sand, gravel, and rock for aggregates. The book covers all periods from the Lower Palaeolithic to Medieval, and is organized on a regional basis. It also describes the legislative background, regional variations, and the effect of environmental change on aggregate-related archaeology. The review, which also contains as yet unpublished data, shows how the variety and preservation of archaeology can greatly expand our understanding of the relationship of humans to their changing environments.

The author has over 20 years experience of working on aggregate and alluvial archaeological sites and is Co-director of the Wetland Research Centre at the University of Exeter and Professor of Palaeoenvironmental Analysis. He has worked on our major rivers including the Severn and Trent as well as many sites from smaller tributaries. Since authoring the main book on Alluvial Geoarchaeology (CUP 1997) he has undertaken a wide range of studies with the core aim of elucidating the changing relationship between culture and environment in river valleys.
