Largest Assemblage of Iron Age Pottery from Norfolk

During fieldwalking by Michael de Bootman in early 2002, a very dense concentration of Iron Age pottery was located, it was clear that some of the underlying features were being eroded by the plough, therefore, after a small trial trench in the summer of that year it was decided to open up a larger trench for the total excavation of a long swallow ditch containing a large deposit of Iron Age pottery. Excavations on the site finished in the summer of 2004 and to date has produced the largest assemblage of Iron Age pottery from Norfolk. A trial trench was also conducted on a large ditch feature which also produced large pottery assemblages together with an Iron Age iron spearhead and a disarticulated human skull of a young female. It is hoped to continue excavations on the site at a later date. The assemblage already excavated will help to form a good Iron Age pottery corpus for Norfolk.

Heritage Marketing and Publications will be funding the full analysis of the pottery, and it is hoped that within the next few years this will be ready for publication.
