Excavation of a probable Roman livestock enclosure 2003
Following fieldwalking by Michael de Bootman in early 2002, a large scatter of Roman pottery was discovered. Dr. Tim Dennis, Essex University conducted a magnetometry survey on the site which located a sub-divided rectilinear enclosure with numerous entrance ways. Within the enclosure two large aisle building together with numerous probable large pits/wells were also noted together with evidence of an iron smelting kiln just outside the eastern enclosure ditch.
During the Spring/Summer of 2003 a small team conducted numerous evaluation trenches on the site to confirm the magnetometry results.
A possible incendiary arrowhead?
Further work is scheduled on this site at a later date.
